Taxpayers are gearing up for another tax season bogged down by slow processing times and unresponsiveness. The new IRS normal.
To make things worse, on February 27th the IRS plans to lay off 6,000 of its workers. The layoff will consist primarily of probationary employees who have worked at the IRS for less than two years. The National Taxpayer Advocate has stated the IRS has already been grappling with understaffing and retaining employees.
Many accountants in the industry warn that an IRS labor shortage will complicate an already overwhelmed tax season during the busiest time of the year. The shortage will lead to slower processing times across the board. It will take significantly longer to receive refunds and achieve resolutions to IRS notices.
